Hi. I'm supposed to be writing "a personalized description of your practice or service" in this box but let's face it, everybody writes a glowing description of his or her practice or service. I'm going to ask a simple question instead: Do you want to feel "better?" Of course you do. Why else would you be looking at psychotherapists' listings. Yes, I work with the usual variety of situations; depression, anxiety, job and personal stress, but psychotherapy isn't a "one size fits all" proposition. You're not a diagnosis, a disease or a disorder. You don't exist in a manual of disorders and your issues are unique to you.
I do have some areas of specialty outside of the general areas that we all cover: I specialize in working with substance users, "internet addiction," and money disorders (overspending, over-extended credit, under-spending and underearning.) I prefer to use a harm-reduction model because absitnence does not have to be the only goal. I also work with people who experience the effects of Adult Attention-Deficit Disorder, helping people to navigate a non-ADD world while we work to undo the usually well-meant but ultimately harmful "suggestions" and "constructive criticisms" that form much of the adult ADDers negative self-talk that contributes to feelings of depression, lack of self-worth & self-esteem. The end result deprives ADDers of a sense of accomplishment and effectiveness in making healthy life choices.
People in the performing arts, restaurant workers and people who travel for work (sales reps, workshop presenters, etc.) have unique problems created by their profession. Schedules can and do change because of the job requirements. I try to be flexible about scheduling around these circumstances when a show, workshop, or class, presentation or sales call takes you out of town or changes our "regular" appointment schedule.
Let's talk about how you can be more comfortable in the world while still being "you." Psychotherapy isn't about changing you into somebody you're not, nor is it about getting you to conform to some standard of behavior or belief. It's about being able to be comfortable in your own skin. To have a sense of agency and choice instead of bound or destined to do the same thing that didn't bring comfort before.
